Disinfect toilet: You remove germs from a surface. The germs that enter the room air with the next flush are unaffected.

 

Open window, ventilate: You exchange room air – reactively, after the particles have already dispersed. In an average 10-cubic-meter bathroom, a complete air exchange with a standard fan takes 18 to 25 minutes. By this time, the aerosol has long since reached all surfaces.

 

Air freshener spray: The blast of compressed air actively further distributes already airborne particles throughout the room. You treat the smell – and thereby worsen the actual problem.

All three measures share the same structural flaw: they intervene at a time when the spread has already occurred.

 

This is the problem that is not explained in any drugstore.

Odor and bacteria travel in the same droplet

 

Every toilet flush generates an aerosol cloud of micro-droplets. These droplets transport two contents simultaneously: volatile organic compounds – which we perceive as odor – and fecal bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Enterococcus, and Clostridioides difficile.

 

Both in the same droplet. Both rise together. Both spread together in the room. Both settle on the same surfaces.

 

A study by the University of Colorado used laser light measurement technology to document that these aerosols reach heights of up to 1.5 meters within 8 seconds of the flush starting. (Johnson et al., Journal of Applied Microbiology, 2013; Schreck et al., Physics of Fluids, 2021)

 

The consequence is as simple as it is unpleasant: Whoever stops the spread of odor molecules at the source also simultaneously stops the spread of bacteria. Whoever only covers up the smell has not stopped the bacteria.

What the room air contains after each flush – minute by minute

 

The following sequence applies to an average German bathroom without active source extraction:

 

0–8 seconds: Aerosol plume rises from the bowl. Droplets with a diameter between 0.3 and 3 micrometers reach heights of up to 1.5 meters. (Schreck et al., Physics of Fluids, 2021)

 

8–120 seconds: The particle cloud loses vertical momentum and spreads horizontally. Radius: up to 2 meters. Toothbrush, soap, towel, contact lens case – everything in this zone is now exposed.

 

2–25 minutes: Smaller droplets under 3 micrometers remain suspended in the air. They fall into the category of so-called respirable particles – small enough to enter the respiratory tract during normal inhalation. From minute 25: Room air normalizes – particles deposited on surfaces remain.

This doesn't happen once a week. It happens several times a day. In every household. Unnoticed.

What inhaling these aerosols means

 

For healthy adults with intact immune systems, the risk during normal use is low – the body is designed to cope with everyday germ exposure.

 

The risk increases in two clearly defined situations:

 

Firstly: Immunocompromised individuals. Children, older household members, the sick, or individuals on medication are more sensitive to germ exposure. Secondly: Foreign bacterial flora. One's own intestinal flora rarely causes problems for one's own body – it is familiar with it. It becomes critical when aerosols contain germs from other people that do not belong to one's own normal flora.

 

Here is a finding that clearly emerges from research: In shared bathrooms, fecal germs on toothbrushes in 80 percent of cases do not originate from the person who owns the toothbrush – but from another person using the same bathroom. (Aber et al., American Society for Microbiology, 2015)

 

Inhaling biologically contaminated aerosols from toilet flushes can lead to illnesses with symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. What ends up on your toothbrush – documented findings

 

A study by the American Society for Microbiology found that 60 percent of toothbrushes in shared bathrooms contained detectable traces of fecal matter – regardless of whether they had been rinsed with hot water, cold water, or mouthwash. (Aber et al., American Society for Microbiology, 2015)

Bacteria commonly detected on toothbrushes include, among others:

  • Escherichia coli – associated with gastrointestinal infections
  • Staphylococcus aureus – can cause skin and body infections
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa – associated with respiratory and urinary tract infections
  • Enterococcus faecalis – detected in studies on toothbrush contamination by toilet plumes

Statistically, in a shared bathroom, the toothbrush, which is placed in the mouth twice daily, is highly likely to be contaminated with germs that do not originate from the user themselves.

Why air freshener spray doesn't solve the bacterial problem – but measurably worsens it

 

The Bremen Environmental Institute – an accredited testing center for indoor air quality in Germany – investigated and confirmed the effect of commercially available air fresheners on actual indoor air quality: Aerosol room sprays neither remove odor molecules nor biological particles from the air. They alter olfactory perception, not the physical composition of the air.

 

In addition, there is a physical effect that is rarely discussed: The compressed air blast of a room spray creates a local air turbulence of several meters per second. Particles that are in the process of settling on surfaces are stirred up again by this pressure blast and further distributed throughout the room.

 

The result: Odor covered up. Bacterial spread accelerated. Additionally, VOC exposure from synthetic fragrances, which in turn can cause headaches and mucous membrane irritation.

The only logically effective approach: stopping it at the source

 

All previous household solutions are reactive – at a time when the spread has already occurred.
